Chronic kidney disease is a progressive condition in which the kidneys are unable to function effectively. Currently, 20 million Americans have kidney disease and another estimated 20 million are at risk. African-Americans are affected disproportionately as they represent 33 percent of patients treated for kidney failure in the U. S., but only 13 percent of the overall population. People at elevated risk include those with diabetes or high blood pressure, and those who have a family history of kidney disease.

The program launched with a kickoff concert at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Atlanta. The concert is one of two Strength in Harmony events taking place this year. The second, a free health workshop and concert featuring Minister Cage, will be held in November at Ebenezer AME Church in Ft. Washington, Maryland. Additionally, The COSHAR Foundation will distribute chronic kidney disease information to the 8,500 congregations that make up its Health Ministries Network.

"There is a great need for education about chronic kidney disease awareness in the African-American community," said Sharon Allison-Ottey, M. Many people do not realize that they have chronic kidney disease, or are at risk for developing it, until they have reached advanced stages of the condition. In fact, results from 37,000 individuals participating in the National Kidney Foundation's (NKF) Kidney Early Evaluation Program (KEEP) screenings showed that half of the participants, most of whom had risk factors, had chronic kidney disease, but only 2 percent were aware of it.

"Ninety percent of the KEEP participants reported visiting their doctors in the last year yet most were not aware they could be at risk for chronic kidney disease," reported Dr. Allan Collins, president-elect of the NKF.

This makes it so important that those at high risk for chronic kidney disease learn to recognize early warning signs of the condition, such as anemia. In fact, the KEEP screenings showed that 21 percent of African-American participants with CKD had anemia, a disproportionately higher rate than other races.

Anemia is a potentially debilitating condition that occurs when the body does not have enough red blood cells, which carry oxygen. Symptoms of anemia include feeling tired or weak, shortness of breath, dizziness, decreased ability to concentrate and paleness.

Standardization of midi technology under the general midi gm standard

The problems that electronic musicians faced with playing their compositions on equipment made by different manufacturers was a serious one in the 1980s. Hook up a MIDI Controller made by one manufacturer to a sound module made by another manufacturer, and your flute solo could come out as a drum solo. You could try adjusting the volume and end up changing the pitch instead. This is because MIDI commands, which are used to control every aspect of the composition from notes played, instrument used, volume, pitch, and many other parameters, are numerical, and once upon a time (meaning the 1980s) different manufacturers used different functions to correspond with different MIDI Command numbers. For example, the number corresponding to a trumpet sound on one brand of equipment might correspond to a harmonica sound on another brand of equipment.

There were many other problems as well, most of them arising from a lack of standardization of the correspondence between MIDI Command numbers and the actual parameters that they adjusted. For this reason, the General MID (GM) standard was created – so that all (or most of) the numbers used to generate any particular MIDI command would do the same thing on any brand of equipment that incorporated the General MIDI standard – for example, the number 12 placed at a certain point in the string of digits that represents any MIDI command now triggers any GM standard sound module to play a Vibraphone sound, and nothing else. This sound may differ somewhat on different sound modules (sound quality will vary depending on how expensive the sound module is and what kind of technology it uses), but at least you won’t end up playing a flute instead of a vibraphone.

The GM standard incorporated a variety of standardizations other than MIDI commands – for example, it required all GM compliant sound modules to be fully multi-timbral – that is, each sound module had to be able to receive MIDI messages on 16 different channels, so that the sound module can play 16 different “patches” (equivalent to 16 different instruments) at once, corresponding to the 16 available MIDI channels.

Acne accuracies

Acne is the eruption of lesions on various parts of your body. You could have acne on your face, on your chest, on your back, on your neck, on your shoulders, and even on the upper part of your arms. These acne lesions might appear as blackheads, whiteheads, nodules or cysts. Most people get acne in their teen years. Some get it in their forties. Acne isn't going to threaten your life, of course, but it could seriously interfere with it, especially if it disfigures you for the rest of your life. Acne doesn't have to be severe to cause disfigurement.

The onset of puberty brings hormonal changes to our bodies and these changes can cause acne. Oil glands, called sebaceous glands because they secrete sebum (oil) are now working more than they were during your childhood before puberty. Androgens, male hormones, are the primary culprit for this abundant secretion. Girls and women have androgens, though they don't have as many as boys and men.

A hair follicle starts the acne ball rolling. This sebaceous follicle, inside the sebaceous gland, is where acne happens. Puberty gets skin lining cells shedding more than in childhood but when they stick together as they sometimes do the extra oil results in a clogged pore. The oil builds up in this pore but can't get out. The follicle swells up and you have a lesion.

P. acne, a bacterium present in your skin starts to multiply to excess because of the clogging in the follicle. Your skin is now irritated and probably inflamed. Should the follicle burst at this point the skin around the follicle is going to react too. You are now going to have nodules, blackheads and/or pimples elsewhere on your skin. You now have acne lesions.

There are myths about acne that have been around for a long time that give you false information about acne. Let's dispel those myths right now. One of the more common of the false ideas you could have about acne is that if your hygiene is poor you're going to get acne. While you may very well get acne that poor hygiene is not the cause. Believing that could make your acne ever so much worse as you harshly scrub your poor face into irritation. Of course you don't want excess oil and dirt from the day's ventures sitting on your face, but when you wash it away be gentle. Only wash your face twice each day, and do so gently. Drying should be patting gently instead of vigorously. If you still have acne try something at the pharmacy that says it treats acne or see a dermatologist.

Stress doesn't affect or cause acne. This is a myth and it's not true. The stress you encounter throughout the day isn't going to bring on acne. Even were you to have stress beyond normal levels and take medication prescribed by your doctor that level of stress still isn't going to cause acne. The medication might, however, and if it does, tell your physician.

Let's also dispel the myth that the food that you consume affects your acne. Nothing could be further from the truth. Yes, do get a healthy balanced diet but don't think it's going to clear up your acne or prevent it from occurring. It won't.

Don't listen to those people who pooh pooh your acne complaints with comments about it only being cosmetic. As a teen especially, there is no "only" to cosmetic flaws. It's a self-esteem issue, and it could be that permanently if that acne gets bad enough and exists long enough to scar you forever.

10 things you never thought to buy on ebay

I have to admit, sometimes I get teased by friends or family for what I buy on eBay. There is very little I purchase that I don't at least attempt to buy on eBay first. Why not? There are thousands (if not millions) of eBay listings at any given time -- that's a pretty amazing resource for everything under the sun. For everything you buy on eBay, there's probably at least one other thing you haven't thought of. To start you off, here's a list of ten things you (probably) never thought to buy on eBay:

1. Postage Stamps: Yes, it is possible to get a discount on postage stamps! A lot of times companies or individuals will purchase a mass quantity of stamps for a mailing and end up not using them all. The USPS doesn't buy back stamps, so a good alternative is to sell on eBay. Expect to pay between 80% and 90% of face value, with the bigger discount coming from a larger purchase quantity.

2. Timeshares: Real estate is big on eBay, especially timeshares! As long as you are careful in reading all of the fine print and purchasing from a reputable seller, you can come away with a great vacation at a fantastic value. You can easily pick and choose from a wide variety of locations, amenities, and prices.

3. Over-the-counter medication: Need to replenish your supply of Advil, Visine, Airborne, or Mylanta? I buy nearly all of my over-the-counter medication on eBay. It's almost always drastically cheaper, and you can also search for generic or store brands. I save hundreds of dollars a year doing this.

4. Makeup: There are certain shades and certain brands of makeup I know I will always use. It's easy to search for these on eBay and buy them in bulk or at a discount. It's also a great way to find discontinued colors that you love and can't live without! I set up a search for my favorite discontinued items and save it so I am emailed whenever an auction matching my criteria comes up. I've been able to keep using a certain shade of lipstick despite the fact that it was discontinued years ago.

5. eBay Business Supplies: I see so many people who sell on eBay using padded envelopes or other supplies from the USPS -- not the free Priority or Express mail supplies, but the expensive supplies sold in post offices. If you know you're going to sell more than just a few items, buy your supplies on eBay! Great discounts are to be had on bubble mailers, bubble sheets, labels, and more.

6. Spices: Yes, kitchen spices! I eat oatmeal nearly every morning and use a generous amount of pumpkin pie spice for flavor. I was spending at least $3 every time I purchased a tiny container of it at the store. I found a supplier on eBay and was able to get over ten times the amount for only twice the price!

7. Gift Cards: If you frequently shop at a certain store, it pays (literally) to check out the gift certificates category on eBay. People resell gift cards they aren't interested in using, and you can often get a good discount. Some of the more popular stores sell for nearly 100% of face value, but others sell for 70% to 90% of face value. If you're going to spend the money at the store anyway, why not buy a gift card and save a few bucks? I like to look at it as free money!

8. Food: The food category on eBay is huge. You can buy your favorite overseas candy, soda flavors you can't find locally, fresh baked cookies just like mom made them, protein bars, elegant desserts, and much more. A word of warning though... looking for food on eBay can make you hungry!

9. Massage Appointments: These can usually be found in the gift certificates category. A lot of spas and massage therapy locations will sell gift certificates for massages at discounted rates to gain new customers. As long as you are careful to check that the location is legit, you can find a great deal. I was able to purchase a fantastic one-hour massage for only $35.

10. Magazine Subscriptions: Magazines make money selling ads, and they can charge more for their ads if they have more subscribers. Because of that, they will let go of a lot of subscriptions to brokers for very low prices. A lot of these brokers sell on eBay. Imagine buying a year's subscription to your favorite magazine for only $3! They usually take four to eight weeks to kick in, but it's well worth the wait.

The Forex market is known to be a very lucrative market, with trillions of dollars exchanged daily. What can you tell about your prospective trainer’s beliefs and values? How well does their content match with your view of the world? What can you learn about the trainer’s background and experience and how does that fit with what your needs are? Have they any qualifications outside NLP? Through all of this keep asking yourself, “Can I learn what I need from this trainer and do they having things to teach me that I will find useful?”

If the answer to the last question was a yes then make arrangements to see, or at least speak with them and ask for reference clients that have similar applications to yours.

A good point to ask NLP Trainers when you meet is to deconstruct their sales process and point out how they are using their NLP and Hypnosis to sell to you. Any great trainer will relish the opportunity to display their knowledge and integration of NLP for a live situation. You will get an idea of how good they are at NLP in a live context, how good they are at explaining it to you and some idea of their ethics and integrity.

Another excellent area to discuss with your prospective trainers is about the local competition. Not the bad points…that would not be a fair question, but ask about what is good about the competition and how do those courses compare to the one you are looking at. Again this gives any great trainer an opportunity to shine. If they are confident with their product and have really built in some unique developments of their own they will be happy to talk up the competition and compare products.
